In Hagsgate, a town of evil in Haggard's deserted land, they learn about the curse on Haggard's reign, made by a witch that wasn't paid. Haggard will fall one day through his own adopted son, Prince Lir.

In a dead forest near Haggard's doomed castle the Red Bull tracks the unicorn finally down and starts hunting her in a dramatic chase. Schmendrick saves her in the last moment by turning her magically into a beautiful young woman, the Lady Amalthea. They enter Haggard’s castle in disguise and become his servants.

Prince Lir falls in love with Lady Amalthea. Lir tries everything that a hero can do to win Amalthea's love, till he realises that she cannot be won by great deeds, only by true love. Their relationship slowly deepens and Amalthea starts forgetting her quest and losing her immortal power, as she becomes more human day by day.

King Haggard has realised that his end is near, but seems to enjoy his drama of decay in a mad triumph. Molly and Schmendrick try everything to find the lost unicorns in Haggard's labyrinthic, surreal castle that changes its shape like a living creature with its own strange moodswings.

After more fantastic adventures, magic, riddles and surprising turning points they find out where the unicorns are. The Red Bull is keeping them for Haggard in the white foam of the waves in the sea for Haggard's delight. Amalthea, Molly, Schmendrick and Lir escape from the castle through time, passing the Red Bull's lair. The bull discovers them and a dramatic final hunt begins in a bizarre underworld - the Red Bull's tunnels underneath the castle.
